Interview with Alex of Self Baked

Knowleaf podcast features cannabis industry leaders to help you Know the Leaf. We spoke with Alex Garakian, Founder of Self Baked, on the launch of his company that has a new take on an old concept.

The product is a Bake-It-Yourself edible, much like a box of brownie or cookie mix, you would find in the grocery store. Each box provides the user with things you need and the instructions to help you along the way to making delicious treats in the comfort of your own home.

The founder alongside his partner/best friend started the company two years ago and are working to launch in the upcoming quarter.

What is your target audience? 

People who want to be part of the process, bake at home, have something fresh. We also want to hit the medical market. People who want to be in control of what they’re taking in. My mom has arthritis when she makes this she feeling in control. She can dose it down, the process has more freedom and feeling comfortable. It’s a new thing for people. 

Can you talk a little bit about your inspiration in getting into Cannabis? 

I’ve been in cannabis for a long time. I have anxiety, I was on medication for my anxiety I, unfortunately, was a zombie. I showed my mom “hey you know these prescription pills over here do this.. and this is me  on cannabis and I’m fine. 

One of my real inspiration is my best friend’s mom as well who unfortunately was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. She was a big kitchen person, she always made the best food so I thought in this process how great it would be if she was making her own medicine. 

A lot of it is begin open and optimistic, find something different, your niche and go for that area. For us it’s baking. We’re going for people who want to be part of that process of making their edibles. 

What would it be like to get into the industry now? What’s the need?

You need to put your all. It’s stressful and there are a lot of moving pieces, you need to know the regulations especially dealing with food. You want people coming back for more, you don’t want people trying your stuff and saying it’s bogus. The money is a huge part of it, being a startup and getting the licensing. You have to be prepared for these types of things.
